Visualising the Invisible
Visualising the Invisible is a new body of interconnected works that collectively explore notions of transformation and the science of light and colour. Particular consideration is given to interacting matter and energy fields, as well as how light, colour and fluorescence can be used to reveal unseen structures, patterns and forces. Alongside more practical explorations, the works also prompt philosophical reflection regarding the dynamic relations and flows between the seen and unseen.
The project includes a series of mixed media works integrating images of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) created by reprogramming the artist’s blood cells into a stem cell state as part of the Posthuman Genetic Legacies Project. The cells were fixed and tagged with fluorescent antibodies. The resulting images reveal how fluorescent properties and colour are used within a scientific context to reveal the cellular structures and growth patterns of stem cells undergoing differentiation into different cell types. Other works within the show feature thermochromic (temperature), photochromic (light) and ultraviolet radiation (UV) reactive pigments to create compositions that change in response to temperature and UV exposure. While these changes are subtle and environmentally dependent, the works are more discernibly activated by the inclusion of colour changing LEDs that reveal different visual elements as the light subtly shifts between different colours. Visualising the Invisible also includes large-scale works integrating chameleon pigments that shift colour depending the viewing angle and position. These works include 3D forms alluding to notions of emergence and the entanglements of matter and energy.
By merging practical scientific visualisation strategies with artistic interpretation, the body of work serves as a creative representation of scientific phenomena. It also acts as an artistic exploration of what it means to perceive, to know, and to experience the world beyond the surface, making tangible the forces and structures that, while crucial to our existence, often remain hidden from our senses.
