Transition Piece #3 is a photomedia work that captures the complex interplay between different cells (human Saos-2 bone cancer cells, HEK 293T cells, the artist’s cells and SF9 insect cells). These cell cultures, scraped and observed under a light microscope, form the basis of images that are projected onto the moving body of a girl and documented through digital photography. This method of projection onto a human figure emphasises the interrelationship between human and non-human life, illustrating the artist’s direct experience with co-culturing these disparate cell types.

The work speaks to the porous boundaries between species and the dynamic nature of cellular and bodily interactions. By projecting microscopic images onto the body, the piece blurs the line between internal and external, living and visualised, evoking questions about identity, transformation, and the convergence of biological forms. Displayed in various configurations and under different titles, Transition Piece #3 fosters diverse interpretations and dialogues, allowing viewers to connect the work with other related pieces and broaden the scope of its thematic resonance.

The projection of cell imagery onto a human form not only symbolises the melding of life forms but also highlights how human bodies and their micro-environments are influenced by encounters with other species. This creates a layered narrative that reflects on hybridity, mutation, and the shared essence of life across different organisms.

The work forms part of The Absence of Alice series.
