SVKR-LM: Tumour Baby
SVKR-LM: Tumour Baby by Svenja Kratz is a mixed-media artwork that explores themes of bodily agency, transformation, and alternative forms of genetic legacy. The piece alludes to the creation of a cell line from fibroid tissue, a benign tumor removed from Kratz's uterus. Using a flask of the artist’s fixed primary skin cells alongside taxidermy butterflies, the work references transformation, drawing parallels with earlier projects like HEK293T: The Transformation of Johni or Oliver, which incorporated genetically modified human embryonic kidney cells.
Through Tumour Baby, Kratz envisions the potential of her fibroid cells to spawn a "tribe" of daughter cells, allowing them to serve both scientific and creative purposes. This work raises questions about the boundaries of the body, genetic legacy, and the ethical considerations of developing “genetic offspring” in research contexts. The artwork serves as a speculative reflection on biological continuity and the possibility of establishing an alternative lineage through biotechnological means.
