Hair and Bug Bone Balls comprises three mixed media sculptures that merge liquid latex, Saos-2 human bone cancer cells, insects, human and synthetic hair. These works delve into the unsettling, uncanny nature of cell culture, drawing from the artist's personal experience culturing Saos-2 cells alongside SF9 cells derived from armyworm larvae. The combination of organic and synthetic elements underscores the strangeness inherent in working with cells that exist independently of their original bodies, blurring the lines between human, animal, and artificial.
The work forms part of The Absence of Alice series.
