Frozen Flowers is an installation that combines cryovials of fixed cells used by Svenja Kratz during the development of The Absence of Alice and The Immortalisation of Kira and Rama with frozen flowers, displayed within a clinical freezer. This work serves as a memorial to the original donors of these cells, honoring the life forms that have contributed to scientific and artistic inquiry. The frozen flowers, preserved alongside the cells, evoke notions of life in stasis.
The work reflects on the suspended state of cells in cryostasis and how the retain a latent potential—each cryovial holds the possibility of revival and further growth and transformation. By positioning these biological materials within a display of preservation, Frozen Flowers meditates on the intersection of life, memory, and potentiality, underscoring the ways in which biotechnological processes both commemorate and transform living matter. The work invites viewers to reflect on the delicate balance between preservation and transformation, life and stasis, and to consider the ethical and existential dimensions of keeping life in a suspended yet potentially reactivatable state.
