Foundations
Foundations is a mixed media series that delves into themes of interspecies and cellular interconnectedness through panels composed of hundreds of hand-made clay shapes inspired by cellular and tissue structures. Drawing on Lynn Margulis’ theory of endosymbiosis—which posits that nucleated cells evolved through the permanent integration of symbiotic bacteria—the work reflects on the profound entanglements that unite all forms of life at the microscopic level.
Some panels in the series are framed with engraved acrylic sheets that isolate specific patterns, layering and transforming these cellular forms into new abstract shapes. This layering and reconfiguration of forms create a dynamic visual language that echoes the adaptability and integration seen in natural systems.
Developed for the Disassemble | Reassemble group show at the Caboolture Regional Gallery, which examined human relationships with organisms and the environment, Foundations invites viewers to contemplate the ancient and ongoing connections that bind living entities. The work underscores the concept that cellular and ecological relationships form the basis of life, emphasising the intricate and symbiotic interactions that underpin biological systems.
