Blood Floriography

Blood Floriography is an artwork that explores themes of femininity, hidden experiences, and societal expectations through the lens of the Victorian language of flowers. Created in collaboration with woodcraft expert Dr. Phil Blacklow and frame historian Anita Gowers, the piece consists of marquetry panels that feature floral motifs symbolising aspects of traditional femininity, such as marriage and fidelity. At the center of each panel is a preserved sample of the artist's clotted period blood, surrounded by mother of pearl, subtly confronting taboos around menstruation and reproductive health issues.

The seductive aesthetic of the floral motifs contrasts with the visceral presence of menstrual blood, hinting at how women’s bodily experiences are often concealed or overlooked by cultural narratives. The work uses this juxtaposition to comment on the constraints of traditional gender roles and the often-unseen aspects of womanhood, challenging viewers to confront the societal norms that shape perceptions of femininity.

Blood Floriography forms part of the Mourning Story exhibition.
